My ex Laura’s Grand Parents are first generation Italian American. When we emigrated from South Africa we literally had zero dollars and they took us in.
So my first jet lagged impressions of the USA was this busy Italian American “how you doin'” household.
We were well fed :).
Laura’s Grand Pa was a gentle soul, great cook and all around lovely guy. One of the interesting things I learned about meatballs from Grand Pa Mandese was to have a bowl of hot water to dip your hands into while you’re working the meatball mix. If you try this you’ll notice that the fat in the meat changes texture and believe me after you cook the meatballs you’ll notice a better texture in the ball.
